Obama upping Nevada stakes; Kerry kicks Clinton

January 10th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Sun columnist Jon Ralston breaks some news about Obama coming back Sunday and Monday. Also, Sen. John Kerry, who endorsed Obama today, cold-called Ralston today. J.R. summarized the conversation to readers of his e-mail newsletter:
So why Obama instead of his former running mate and the former first lady?
“The times are different,” Kerry said. “The times […]

A big turnout and a little exit poll

January 8th, 2008 · No Comments

NASHUA, H.H. — The turnout in New Hampshire is widely reported to be through the roof, with an on-the-record quote out of the Secretary of State’s office attesting to that fact.
I got a taste of it in Ward 5 in Concord at the Green Street Community Center. There was nearly 50 percent turnout with two […]

Huffington Post: Clinton may concede Nevada

January 8th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Tom Edsaall, former Washington Post reporter, writes on the Huffington Post that Clinton may concede Nevada and South Carolina.
Reports are now conflicting, with the AP and other published reports talking about Clinton treating Nevada like a firewall.
“Manchester, N.H. — A panicked and cash-short Clinton campaign is seriously considering giving up on the Nevada caucuses and […]

Larry David on Obama

January 8th, 2008 · No Comments

CONCORD, N.H. — Downtown at the state capital. The Clinton bus just rolled through. The sky is clear and the air has reached 50 degrees. Expect big turnout, which is what the campaigns are reporting thus far.
Larry David was at an Obama event on the campus of Dartmouth College today, and was a meanie to […]

Waiting for the oppo research to surface

January 8th, 2008 · No Comments

CONCORD, H.H. — As I write this, the polls here opening in just a few hours, the signs point to Sen. Clinton treating Nevada like her ultimate firewall. If that’s the case, we can expect 10 days of tough campaigning back home, heavy on the negatives from the Clinton camp. And the Obama team […]

Nevada as lifeline, unless…

January 8th, 2008 · No Comments

The Washington Post reports Clinton’s advisers believe their first lifeline is Nevada, where pre-Iowa and pre-New Hampshire polls showed her with a big lead. But if Obama wins in New Hampshire, he will have the inside track on an endorsement from the Culinary Workers Union, which could play a significant role in a caucus process […]

Not exactly “Hell no, we won’t go”

January 7th, 2008 · No Comments

SALEM — During a Clinton rally here, a couple goofballs stood up during her speech and started yelling, “Iron my shirt!” They had yellow signs that said the same.
They were dragged away.
Clinton said “Sexism rears its ugly head,” and referenced the glass ceiling. She got her only standing-o of the night. She […]

Waiting for a new angle

January 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Overheard at Sen. Hillary Clinton’s huge rally in Manchester.
A national magazine journalist to a Clinton heavy: “Yeah, it’ll eventually flip around, because we need a new narrative.”
This means Obama will start getting a little bad press soon enough, and then they’ll pile on. But will it be soon enough for Clinton?

Republicans after New Hamshire

January 7th, 2008 · No Comments

CONCORD, N.H. — Romney is surging the past 36 hours, according to some polls, and The Atlantic’s Mark Ambinder. He reports 800 turning out in Bedford, after a long day of events.
The polls have Romney and McCain within the margin of error. I had a soda with a reporter from a conservative publication who told […]

Honey, Gallup is calling. Wanna answer?

January 7th, 2008 · No Comments

CONCORD — A quick note on New Hampshire voters. Jo and Elliot Mednick of the Salem area told me they get 10 calls a day from campaigns and/or pollsters. Usually they don’t answer, but they said it’s pretty cool when “Gallup” is what reads on the caller ID, so they sometimes pick up. They […]
