WASHINGTON — This just in: Nevada Sen. John Ensign’s workload in Mississippi was shored up today as the state’s governor announced the appointment of Republican Rep. Roger Wicker to serve out the term of Sen. Trent Lott, the Republican Whip, who stepped down this month.
Lott’s unexpected departure put the state in play for 2008, giving Ensign another seat to fill as chairman of the Republican committee to elect senators. Wicker, a seven-term congressman, is expected to seek the seat in 2008.
Ensign issued a statement shortly after the announcement: “I look forward to working with Congressman Roger Wicker both in the Senate and on his campaign in 2008.”
