Waiting for a safe endorsement

By Lisa Mascaro · December 24th, 2007 ·

WASHINGTON — There’s been much speculation about who Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would like to see in the White House afer the 2008 election. With four Democratic senators running, and Nevada holding an early caucus, he has gone to great lengths to profess neutrality.

Even when his son, County Commission Chairman Rory Reid signed on with the Clinton campaign, the elder Reid had to assure all his son has a mind of his own.

But with Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the Independent Democrat from Connecticut, endorsed Republican Sen. John McCain last week, Washington couldn’t let it go. At Reid’s year-end press conference, a reporter asked if he wasn’t ready to endorse.

“I’m going to do it,” Reid quipped about making his endorsement, “I’m going to wait until we have a nominee.”
