WASHINGTON — What better way to share the holiday spirit between Nevada’s two senators than with a little humor over an issue that is now dividing the state?
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has vowed to stop new coal plants proposed for Nevada. Republican Sen. John Ensign has vowed to do all he can to trip up his colleague’s efforts.
At Wednesday night’s joint holiday party for their staffs in the Capitol, Ensign presented Reid with a nicely wrapped gift. Reid unwrapped the present and looked into the box. He was stunned. Silence fell over the room.
It was a piece of coal, Ensign explained. “Clean coal,” Ensign reportedly said, as he demonstrated by rubbing the polished hunk to show that no dust would come off. Reid burst out laughing. And so did everyone else.
